Living with an itchy vagina can be very uncomfortable, especially when you scratch it, as it makes it worse. Also, a healthy vagina should not feel itchy all the time. If your vagina is itchy, you can easily give it relief at home. Itching or burning in the vagina of women may mean that they have a yeast infection, which is a common thing. 

According to statistics, 3 out of 4 women experience it at least once in their lifetime. The infection is accompanied by pain, tingling and intense itching in the vagina, which is extremely uncomfortable. Vaginal bacterial infections are most common in women between the ages of 25 and 35. Vaginal itching can be due to many reasons such as vaginal dryness, lack of cleanliness, Using chemicals or using a bad razor. Itching or burning in the vagina of women may mean that they have a yeast infection, which is a common thing.

Some causes of vaginal itching:

1.   Bacterial Vaginosis: Our vagina contains a healthy mix of bacteria but when the number of bad bacteria increases in excess, it can lead to infection. There may be a number of symptoms, including itching, swelling, burning, discharge, or a foul odor.

2. Sexually transmitted diseases: Sexually transmitted diseases, including chlamydia, gonorrhea or trichomoniasis, can cause vaginal itching and burning.

3. Yeast Infection: This is one of the most common problems in a woman’s life. A yeast infection in the vagina occurs when there is an overgrowth of Candida. There can be many reasons for yeast infection including pregnancy, sexual intercourse, weakened immune system, antibiotics etc.

4. Menopause: This occurs when the production of estrogen decreases towards the end of the reproductive years of women. This may cause itching and burning.

5. Chemical Reaction: This includes creams, condoms, contraceptive creams, detergents, soaps, scented toilet paper, douches, which can cause vaginal irritation.

6. Lichen sclerosis: In this, white patches are formed on the skin and permanent patches can be formed at the vaginal area.

Some other conditions can also cause itching, including:

1. Medicines such as antibiotics or steroids.

2. Tight clothes or damp clothes.

3. Cancer of Cervix or Vagina

4. Unmanaged Diabetes

5. Skin conditions such as lichen planus or vaginitis.

Home remedies to stop vaginal itching:

1. Neem leaves 

Neem has many medicinal properties. It is an anti fungal which is known to stop the infection growing in the body. To use, mix some neem leaves in your bath water and take a bath with it. Or boil neem leaves in water for 10 minutes. When the water cools down, then wash your secret part with this water.

2. Coconut Oil

According to a report published in a study, coconut oil works effectively in killing 52 types of yeast. All you have to do is apply 2-3 drops of coconut oil on the affected area 3-4 times a day. Stop applying it when you see improvement. Apart from this, you should also include coconut oil in your diet. A 2016 study showed that coconut oil can kill Candida albicans, which causes yeast infections. If you are also struggling with this problem, then apply coconut oil directly in the vagina. But keep in mind that coconut oil is completely of high quality. Wear a pad after applying the oil so that there is no stain on the cloth.

3. Baking Soda

Bathing with baking soda can help treat yeast infections and reduce itching. According to a 2013 study, baking soda has antifungal properties, which can kill bacteria that cause irritation. Add 1/4 cup of baking soda to your bath water and take a bath or soak yourself in it for a while.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar

Like baking soda, taking a bath with apple cider vinegar (ACV) can also help soothe an infection or itching. Apple cider vinegar has antifungal and antibacterial properties, which inhibit the growth of bacteria. Take a bath with half a cup of apple cider vinegar in water.

5. Tea Tree Oil

Some essential oils are also effective in treating vaginal infections. One of these is tea tree oil, which you can use for vaginal itching. Its antifungal properties can kill many types of yeast and fungus. Take just 2-3 drops of tea tree oil in your hand and apply it on the outer skin of the vagina. Surely you will get relief from this.

6. Basil leaves 

Tulsi leaves contain thymol and eugenol, which removes skin irritation. Just wash some fresh basil leaves and rub it on the affected area. Or you can also prepare Tulsi tea and apply it on the affected area by dipping cotton in it.

Keep these things in mind :

1. Wear cotton undergarments so that the sweat in the vagina dries up. 

2. Always wear clean clothes. 

3. Keep the skin around the vagina clean as well. 

4. Do not use chemical-rich hygiene wash. 

5. Avoid wearing too tight undergarments. 

6. Throw away your old razor and buy a new one

7. Wear cotton clothes.

8. Do not use very harsh soaps to clean your vagina. 

9. Drink lots of water. 

10. Adopt cleanliness during periods. Change the pads every four hours. 

11. Change clothes immediately after gym or swimming.
